Located next to St. Peter's Basilica, the Campo Santo Teutonico is the retreat of the Roman Institute of the Görres Society (RIGG), the well-known academic centre for research into the history of the Church and Christian cultural heritage.
On 25–26 June, a one-day seminar on the topic ‘Constructing the Sacred: Liturgy, Architecture and Experience in the Late Antique East’ will take place at the University of Warsaw. The main focus will be on the (Syrian) bema.
Cathedral Chapters in the Middle Ages – A Comparison of Germany and Italy
Prof. Dr Enno Bünz, Professor of Saxon and Comparative Regional History at the Department of History, University of Leipzig, and Dr Jörg Voigt, Medieval History Officer at the Roman Institute of the Görres Society, are organising an international conference on medieval cathedral chapters.
From 20 to 25 November 2026, the Roman Institute of the Görres Society is organising its fifth sponsors' trip to Rome. The occasion is the 25th International Festival of Church Music.

Father Markus Scheifele (48) is a priest of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart and was ordained in 2007. Over the past 14 years, he has worked at the Diocesan Youth Office – initially for five years in the altar server ministry, and subsequently as head of the Youth Office. At the same time, he served as parish priest in Esslingen am Neckar.
From 21 to 25 November, the Fondazione Pro Arte e Musica Sacra is organising its 25th music festival in Rome’s major basilicas, featuring sacred music by Mozart, Perosi and Monteverdi. To mark the occasion, the RIGG is organising a fundraising trip.
From 6 March to 5 July 2026, the Museo del Corso – Polo Museale in Rome will be exhibiting around 50 masterpieces by European artists such as Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Frans Hals, Jan Steen, Lucas Cranach, Titian, Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, Orazio Gentileschi, Velázquez and Caravaggio.
The renowned archaeologist Filippo Coarelli will be giving lectures in May and June at the Fondazione Marco Besso (Largo di Torre Argentina) in Rome on Laocoön, Sperlonga and Rhodes.
The annual meeting of German-speaking church historians will take place from 14 to 16 September at the EmmeramForum in Regensburg. The theme is ‘Epochal breaks and turning points in the history of the Church and theology’. Registration is required by 29 May.
Prof. Dr Johan Ickx, Head of the Historical Archives of the Secretariat of State and Deputy Director of the Roman Institute of the Görres Society, was presented with the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (Croce di Cavaliere dell’Ordine al Merito Ungherese) by Ambassador Péter Kweck on 26 March.
To mark the 150th anniversary of the Pontifical Priestly College at Campo Santo Teutonico (1876–2026), a commemorative volume edited by Dr Ignacio García Lascurain Bernstorff and Stefan Heid will be published by Herder in September as the 76th The volume will contain over 20 articles spanning approximately 800 pages and will cover both individuals and groups who have shaped the college..
The 75th volume in the series of supplements to the *Römische Quartalschrift* will be published by Herder in June. It is authored by Richard Pfannmüller and is entitled "Bavaria and the Holy See: Relations during the Reign of King Maximilian II (1848–1864)" (Bayern und der Heilige Stuhl: Die Beziehungen während der Regierungszeit des Königs Maximilian II. (1848–1864)).
Prof. Dr Holger A. Klein from Columbia University in New York, a specialist in Byzantine art and art history, will speak on 30 May on the topic: ‘Constantinople, Rome and Venice – Cities, Relics and the Vision of the Heavenly Jerusalem’.

The final, 272nd volume of the *Reallexikon für Antike und Christentum* is scheduled to be published later this year. This marks the completion of this work, whose origins date back to the period before World War II. For decades, it has been a hallmark of the University of Bonn and the Westphalian Academy of Sciences.

A conference on inscriptions in manuscripts from the 15th to the 17th centuries will take place at Sapienza University of Rome from 8 to 10 June.
On 4 June at 10 am, a protest against the closure of Humboldt University’s Winckelmann Institute of Archaeology will take place at Unter den Linden 6. Many members of the Roman Institute of the Görres Society have also signed the petition to save the institute.
