The complete renovation of the Campo Santo Teutonico, which is planned to take several years, was initiated on 19 October with the signing of the contract for the renovation of the historic wall by Ambassador Dr Bernhard Kotsch, Rector Konrad Bestle and Camerlengo Franco Reale.

The Federal Republic of Germany is providing the funding. The wall was built in the late 18th century under Pope Pius VI Braschi in rococo style, at the same time as the so-called "Hospice" (the former main building, i.e. the current entrance area). The construction of the wall and the hospice in the 18th century were compensation for the loss of older buildings and a reduction of the cemetery, which was necessary to make room for the sacristy of St. Peter.

The partially emergency-secured wall needs to be renovated in two areas in particular: the main portal and the ballustrade on the top of the wall.
