The cathedral vicar of Münster, August Bahlmann, published his impressions of his trip to Rome in 1863 and has some astonishing things to say about the brotherhood at Campo Santo Teutonico (Eine Reise nach Rom, p. 391):

"In the meantime some abuses had crept into the brotherhood. Because the friars lived far from each other in the city, they often used the feasts in Campo Santo to spend a happy day with each other. After the divine functions, after solemn processions, and often after funerals, breakfast or lunch was taken instead of the refreshment that had been customary in the past. It was said in Rome that "the Germans never left Campo Santo without a red nose"."
