The latest publication by the Roman Institute of the Görres Society, in the supplement series of the "Römische Quartalschrift", is by Richard Pfannmüller, a retired secondary school teacher and lecturer in Medieval Latin at Ludwig Maximilian University of Würzburg.

In his book *Bavaria and the Holy See: Relations during the Reign of King Maximilian II (1848–1864)*, Pfannmüller examines the reign of Maximilian II in the light of his church policy. He demonstrates how Bavaria was largely able to assert its own interests regarding state church law, the filling of bishoprics and Reisach’s creation as a cardinal. The bishops, appointed by mutual agreement following extensive preliminary discussions, were of a royal-Bavarian persuasion; bishops with ultramontane views were prevented from taking office. Pfannmüller also examines Bavarian foreign policy and the Catholic milieu, describing how a strengthened ultramontanism emerged in Bavaria.
