69. Supplement of the Römische Quartalschrift
Built at the end of the 15th century, the church of Santa Maria della Pietà is incomparably less well-known than its location, the Campo Santo Teutonico next to St Peter's in Rome, whose tradition dates back to the time of Charlemagne. The last two extensive redesigns of its interior took place in 1871-1873 and 1960-1977. Against the background of the prevailing liturgical and monument preservation ideas and influenced by judgements of taste typical of the time, an attempt was made in each case to deal adequately with the historical building fabric at this special place. On the basis of hitherto largely unpublished sources, the present volume reconstructs the eventful history of the interior decoration and the lost historicist painting. At the same time, a series of historical photographs are made accessible to the public for the first time.
