Cathedral Chapters in the Middle Ages – A Comparison of Germany and Italy

Prof. Dr Enno Bünz, Professor of Saxon and Comparative Regional History at the Department of History, University of Leipzig, and Dr Jörg Voigt, Medieval History Officer at the Roman Institute of the Görres Society, are organising an international conference on medieval cathedral chapters.

Cathedral chapters were of central importance in the Middle Ages and ranked among the most significant ecclesiastical and secular authorities. They played a key role in the administration of dioceses, the election of bishops, and the liturgical organisation of cathedrals. Scholarly research into these institutions and their personnel offers new insights into the intertwining of church and society in the Middle Ages and enables a better understanding of the complex power structures that shaped religious life and the political landscape of Europe.
The conference will examine cathedral chapters in the Middle Ages from a comparative perspective. The focus will be particularly on cathedral chapters in Germany and Italy. The research will examine both the structure and personnel of the chapters as well as their role in diocesan administration and regional governance. The relationship between cathedral chapters and the bishop, as well as the papacy, will also be addressed. Particular emphasis will be placed on the liturgy, architecture and furnishings of the cathedrals, and on the question of institutional interactions between the cathedral chapters and the Papal Curia.
The conference thus adopts a comparative perspective in order to systematically discuss the development, structure and function of cathedral chapters in Germany and Italy.
