Paul Maria Baumgarten, a convert and priest from Wuppertal-Barmen, is one of the most enigmatic figures of the Campo Santo Teutonico. He came to Rome as an assistant to Heinrich Finke, the historian from Münster and later president of the Görres Society. Although highly gifted and versatile, Baumgarten was denied both an ecclesiastical and an academic career.
