The special exhibition ‘Carpaccio, Bellini and the Early Renaissance in Venice’, including the altarpieces by Vittore Carpaccio, can be seen at the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart until 2 March. Altarpieces played a central role in Catholic mass practice until they were abolished following the introduction of popular altars after the Second Vatican Council.

As a result, the function and pictorial language of these images are hardly known today, especially as most altarpieces have now been museumised or languish in magazines. This makes the special exhibition in Stuttgart with its many special guided tours all the more commendable. On 25 January, the History Association of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart and the Academy of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart will be holding an event with Andreas Holzem and others.
