Comprehensive book on the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome
Andreas Raub, scientific director of the Museum Centre of Santa Maria Maggiore and RIGG consultant for art history, has published a 430-page, bilingual splendid volume on Santa Maria Maggiore.
The co-authors include Olof Brandt (PIAC) for the archaeological excavations, Elisabeth Kieven for the 18th century, Sible de Blaauw for the early Christian church and Arnold Nesselrath for the 15th century. Raub himself deals with the 13th century and has explained the concept of the renovated museum, which is housed in new rooms. The new tour also includes the excellently preserved mosaic of the medieval façade.
The book project is part of the new, efficient management of the basilica and its art treasures under Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, which has led to an increased flow of tourists.
The English-Italian volume is characterised by excellent, large-format illustrations. Although the book has been scientifically validated by the authors, its opulent presentation is intended to appeal to a wider audience. Editions in other languages are planned.
